Six Week Bran Muffins

2 cups boiling water
5 tsp. baking soda
     Mix and let cool. (Can add 2 cups of raisins or dates now if wanted.)
Cream together:
1 cup shortening
2 cups sugar
4 eggs-beaten
1 quart buttermilk
     Blend together.
Stir in:
6 cups Bran flakes
5 cups flour
1 tsp. Salt
     Add soda mixture to Bran mixture and blend. Can be baked immediately or put in an air tight container and stored for up to six weeks. Do not stir after it is made, just spoon out as needed and return mixture to refrigerator. Bake for 20 minutes at 400 degrees. Can add nuts if desired.
